Hendrick Polanco My deepest condolences February 26, 2015

My deepest condolences.  May these few words from the Holy Scriptures bring you comfort in your time of grief...

John 11:32-45

32 And so Mary, when she arrived where Jesus was and caught sight of him, fell at his feet, saying to him: “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.” 33 Jesus, therefore, when he saw her weeping and the Jews that came with her weeping, groaned in the spirit and became troubled; 34 and he said: “Where have YOU laid him?” They said to him: “Lord, come and see.” 35 Jesus gave way to tears. 36 Therefore the Jews began to say: “See, what affection he used to have for him!” 37 But some of them said: “Was not this [man] that opened the eyes of the blind man able to prevent this one from dying?”

38 Hence Jesus, after groaning again within himself, came to the memorial tomb. It was, in fact, a cave, and a stone was lying against it.39 Jesus said: “TAKE the stone away.” Martha, the sister of the deceased, said to him: “Lord, by now he must smell, for it is four days.”40 Jesus said to her: “Did I not tell you that if you would believe you would see the glory of God?” 41 Therefore they took the stone away. Now Jesus raised his eyes heavenward and said: “Father, I thank you that you have heard me. 42 True, I knew that you always hear me; but on account of the crowd standing around I spoke, in order that they might believe that you sent me forth.” 43 And when he had said these things, he cried out with a loud voice: “Laz´a·rus, come on out!” 44The [man] that had been dead came out with his feet and hands bound with wrappings, and his countenance was bound about with a cloth. Jesus said to them: “Loose him and let him go.”

45 Therefore many of the Jews that had come to Mary and that beheld what he did put faith in him;

Dear Ann and Dan,

I am deeply saddened to hear about the death of my dear friend, Walter. I know how difficult this must be for you and the rest of your family. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

I shall always cherish the memories I have of Walter while working together at GE and later as we continued our friendship. Walter was such a kind soul, specially to me. He was a guide and brother to me. Whenever I had an issue or a problem or needed guidance, while working together, I would rush to Walter for help. Our many overseas trips together helped solidify our close bonds. I truly always loved and admired him.

I share deeply in your sorrow. Nooshi shares my thoughts as well and sends her condolences.

Fondly,

Jay Naghib

Dear Dan, Adam, Martha, Libby,

What an amazing tribute [this site is]! Walter was extraordinary! It's great that so many aspects of his remarkable life will be revealed for all to see. He will be honored and acknowledged always! ... He was a unique and gifted person and was fortunate to be loved by his caring and devoted family. ... His talented and devoted grandchildren represent just another of the many legacies he left. I'm sure that each of you have your own stash of personal memories that you will cherish always.

Love, Elaine

Dear Elizabeth,

It is with great sorrow that we have learned of the death of your father, and we wanted to tell you that our hearts are with you. Many souvenirs come back to me, not only of your wedding (in CT) but of your family’s stay at Fontaniere (France).

I have just listened to the magnificent recording that Walter sent me: “The Shepherd on the Rock, Op.129” by Schubert, with R. Serkin piano, H. Wright on clarinet, and Benita Valente, soprano.

We know that family is very important in these moments and ask you to give our love and best wishes to your family.

Huge hugs to everyone and we hope to see you soon,

Dear Adam, Martha, Dan, Libby and Ann, and families: Thanks so much for posting the story/obituary. It was imperative that Walter's survivor story be told. His entire life story is pretty incredible. I never knew he was so proactive, so aware that he had to flee while his family was not. Beautifully told. I am so impressed with his strong, independent spirit. The Glass progeny and grandkids inherited that, definitely.

Love to all of you Glasses, spouses, grandkids and sorry for your tremendous loss.  Susie, (Lindsay, Emily, Alison)

Hi Martha,

Zoe forwarded your email and I wanted to let you know that I'm thinking of you and your family. I wish I could be there for the memorial service. Your father spoke at my mother's service about Quakerism and it was very comforting to have him there with your mother. It doesn't feel right not to be there for all of you, but I'm really stuck here that weekend.

I have some very distinct memories of your father and mother...mostly in Vermont. I always thought they were very unusual in that they liked to hold hands and sit on the big platform couch together....so great to have open displays of affection!

Sending lots of love to all of you and please pass on my regrets...

love,

Sarah

Dear Martha,

Thank you so much for letting me know [of Walter's passing] -- and I am so sorry to hear it! I know it was not unexpected but I feel a great sense of loss. I always loved your father and felt we had a special bond from the time I was a young girl. (I think many children felt this way about him!) One of my first memories as a child is chasing after him on Cuttyhunk Island when I was about four and was the "mad puncher." He had such a sense of fun and a wonderful soulful sweetness.

My heart goes out to all of you, especially your mother, and I will get in touch with her as well.

I am so glad that you spent time with him at the end and imagine this provided some solace. It comforts me to just to hear it.
I would have liked to come to the memorial service but will be in Mexico that weekend. But I will be thinking of Walter -- and of all of you -- on the 28th.

Please give my condolences to everyone in the family and let's be in touch. [...]

            With love and best wishes,

             Zoe

I remember Walter Glass fondly.  I was a co-high school student and friend of Martha's.
I remember dinners and breakfasts with the Glass family in Edgemont, NY.
I was a troubled teen and Mr. Glass was a kind and generous person.
I am truely sorry for your loss.
    Love, Thelma
